Lay a length of string on your lawn to mark the outline of the flower garden you wish to build. Whether you choose to build a square garden in the center of your lawn, a random-shaped garden along the side of the lawn or a circular garden, the string will help you gauge the size of the garden before you begin digging.

Dig up the rough shape of the garden with a shovel. Depending on how you wish to build the garden, you can remove the dirt from the garden area, screen it and reuse it or remove it and replace it with fresh dirt from a garden center. Do not focus your attention on the outline of the garden, as the shovel is not the right tool for the job.

Edge the perimeter of the garden with an edger. Step on it to push it in to the ground much as you would a shovel, but then flick the dirt up and in to the garden. Edgers are vital for creating a smooth line to divide a garden from a lawn. Continue edging around the garden's perimeter until the outline is smooth and complete.

Tips & Warnings
If desired, buy plastic edging strips and hammer them in to the dirt around the perimeter of the garden. This process is not always necessary, but can help to prevent the spread of grass and weeds from your lawn in to the garden.
When cutting your lawn, avoid blowing grass clippings in the direction of the garden. Always blow clippings away from the garden so the edge of the garden remains free of grass and other debris.
