How to Groom Poodles' Tails

Poodle tails usually have a pom, or ball, shaped on the end.

One of the most noteworthy things about poodles is the unique grooming style they are often given, especially poodles competing in American Kennel Club-sanctioned dog shows. There are a number specific trims that are done to a poodle's coat, depending on whether the dog is being groomed for a show or just to be a house pet. The tail is groomed in the same manner for all poodle cuts, however, and can be done using both electric dog grooming clippers and scissors.

Things You'll Need

• Slicker brush
• Detangling comb
• Electric dog grooming clippers
• Clipper guide attachments
• Scissors

Instructions

1. Brush the poodle's tail fully using a slicker brush, which is designed to remove tangles or matted fur. Use a detangling comb to remove any matted fur missed while brushing.

2. Use electric dog grooming clippers, set on the second lowest setting, to shave the base of the tail. Trim so there is just a thin layer of fur covering the base of the tail. Leave between 1 1/2 to two inches of fur on the end of the tail (more for larger poodles, such as standard poodles, and less for toy or teacup poodles).

3. Attach a medium or long clipper guide attachment to the electric clippers (depending on the size of the poodle). Trim the fur on the end of the tail to an even length.

4. Use scissors to shape the tail fur into a pom, or ball. Trim away any extraneous hairs missed while clipping.

5. Brush or comb the tail again to remove any clippings.
