DIY Wooden Wedding Card Boxes

Planning a wedding requires creativity, energy, patience and money. How much money is, of course, up to you. Sticking to a budget is possible when you decide to skip the pre-made extras and opt for rolling up your sleeves and making something yourself. A project that is appropriate for even the most inexperienced DIY beginner is a wooden wedding card box. Accept those well-wishing cards, including the ones with cash gifts, in a craft of your own creation.

Things You'll Need

  • Wooden wine crate with hinged lid
  • Hard-bristled brush
  • Microfiber rag
  • Wood cleaner
  • Pencil
  • Notepad
  • Photographs of the bride-to-be and groom-to-be
  • Photo-safe glue
  • Scissors
  • Card and envelope
  • Pen
  • Acrylic or other thick paint (optional)

Prepare the Crate

  • Open and empty the wooden wine crate of any bottles or other items stored inside, if applicable.

  • Remove any bottle-securing inserts.

  • Brush any dust or large particles out of the box with the hard-bristled brush.

  • Lightly coat the microfiber rag with the wood cleaner. The cleaner can be store-bought or homemade.

  • Wipe the inside of the box, including the lid, with the rag until all remaining dirt is removed.

Decorate Inside Lid

  • Select a group of photographs, of various sizes, of the bride-to-be and groom-to-be. Include photographs of each individual as well as pictures of the bride-to-be and groom-to-be together.

  • Use the pencil and notepad to sketch where on the inside lid of the crate you want to place the photographs. You can design a collage of overlapping photographs or choose a few pictures to place in specific spots on the inside of the lid.

  • Apply photo-safe glue to the back of the first photograph and place on the correct spot of the inside lid of the crate. Repeat this process for the remaining photographs.

  • Step away from the crate and walk past it once or twice to see what it looks like at different angles.

  • Add photographs to any glaring empty spots, if applicable. Trim the photographs with scissors if needed.

Add Finishing Touches

  • Insert the greeting card into the matching envelope.

  • Write the name of the wedding couple on the front of the envelope.

  • Apply glue to the back of the envelope.

  • Affix the envelope to the bottom of the wooden wine crate. This starter-card will inform guests that the decorated wine crate is the wedding card box without having to label the crate in any way.

  • Optionally, you can add the names of the bride-to-be and groom-to-be, and the wedding date, on the front of the wine crate using a thick paint.
