How to Make Large Paper Fortune Cookies

How to Make Large Paper Fortune Cookies thumbnail
Make a paper version of everyone's favorite part of ordering Chinese food -- the fortune cookie.

Break away from the standard single-fold card the next time you plan to provide someone with money or a gift card packaged in a homemade card. Instead, use a decorative sheet of scrapbook paper to fashion a fortune cookie large enough to stash the cash or card in, as well as a strip of paper with a special message for the recipient. You can also use the paper fortune cookies as party favors by filling them with small treats, or put a bunch of them in a vase to create a colorful centerpiece.

Instructions

    • 1

Draw a 10-inch circle on the back of a sheet of scrapbook paper using a compass. Cut the circle out with scissors.

    • 2

Cut a 3-by-11-inch strip of printer paper. Write the fortune, message or greeting on the strip with black marker leaving 2 inches blank at each end of the strip.

    • 3

Place the circle of paper on your work surface with the printed side down. Lay the strip of paper on the circle centered between the top and bottom edges with 1 1/2 inches of one end hanging over the right edge.

    • 4

Bring the top edge of the circle down to meet the bottom edge without creasing the paper. You want what would be the folded edge to remain rounded.

    • 5

Fold the circle in half by bringing the left and right sides up to meet where the top edge once was while keeping the top and bottom edge together. This creates the fortune cookie shape.

Tips & Warnings

  • Tuck a monetary gift or gift card in the fortune cookie as you fold it to use it as a gift container.
