How to Make Jewelry Out of Pantyhose

Customize your jewelry with various colors of hosiery.

Transform a pair of pantyhose into a piece of jewelry with a textured feel. Recycling the pantyhose keeps it out of the landfill. Use one or more colors of hose to create your wearable art. For example, black pantyhose fashioned around an old necklace forms a backdrop for your costume jewelry. This recycled jewelry may be a hit at your group’s next fundraiser.

Instructions

  1. Recycle a Necklace

    • 1

Place an old necklace on a flat surface.

    • 2

Cut strips of pantyhose. The strips can be wide or narrow, depending on the effect you want.

    • 3

Knot or wrap the strips around the necklace. The strips do not have to cover the necklace smoothly. Ridges or bumps add visual interest. For example, the "figure of eight" stopper knot features two graceful loops that resemble a figure eight. Loop one tail over itself to form the first loop. Loop the tail under the straight or standing part to form the second loop. Pass the tail over and down through the first loop. Tuck the ends underneath or leave the raw edges showing.

    • 4

Attach brooches, trinkets or other bling. The pantyhose forms a backdrop.

    Create a Bracelet

    • 5

Cut one leg of pantyhose or a long strip.

    • 6

Tie a knot about 2 inches from the toe of the pantyhose.

    • 7

Continue threading on the loops or beads and securing them with knots.

    • 8

Try on the bracelet for the right fit. For example, create a dangling bracelet that is loose around the wrist. A tighter shape can conform to your arm’s contours.

Tips & Warnings

  • Create an edgy, industrial look with metal washers and other hardware for your bracelet.

  • Keep small objects that pose a choking hazard away from small children.
