How to Make Candles With a Whipped Top

Whipped candle wax can create the appearance of snow, whipped cream or foam on decorative candles. The main candle, whether purchased or made, should be finished in advance of creating the whipped topping. The topping needs to be applied to a solid, set candle in order to dry in place. Customize whipped wax with candle colorants or fragrance oils. Use the wax on round candles for snowballs or as the accent on dessert-shaped candles.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill the lower level of the double broiler with water and bring to a low boil. Add 1 lb. cubed paraffin wax into the upper level and fit the upper level onto the bottom. Cook until the wax is fully melted, stirring to check for lumps.

    • 2

Place a candle thermometer in the melted wax. Wait for it to read 160 degrees Fahrenheit. Remove the upper broiler from heat. Stir in 1 tbsp. cornstarch immediately.

    • 3

Use an electric mixer on low speed to beat the wax while it is still in the pot. Mix until it takes on the appearance of thick whipped cream.

    • 4

Use the spatula to apply small amounts of the whipped wax at a time around the finished candle you want to decorate. Note that you shouldn't treat this as if it is actual frosting because the consistency is different. Work in small sections and carefully dab on the fluffed wax to make it look as though it were spread around.

Allow to dry for 2 to 3 hours until the foam wax is solid. Display as desired.
