How to Make a Blouse for a Genie Costume

Genie costumes can be made with a few bits of extra sparkly fabric and clothing items from around the house.

The great thing about dressing up as a genie for Halloween is that you can use a variety of colors and styles for the costume. Most genie costumes consist of wide trousers, a blouse, a hat and shoes. Pink, purple, red or green are some of the most popular shades for genie costumes. Generally, genie costume blouses are pretty open, despite that the word ‘genie’ translates as ‘hidden or closed one’. A genie blouse can be made after a girdle pattern or it can have lots of frills and puffs.

Things You'll Need

• Tank top
• Spangles or other sparkly decorative pieces
• Tulle or lace, or any other light fabric
• Ribbons or lace
• Fabric glue

Instructions

Choose a Tank Top

1. Take the tank top and cut off its lower part. Keep the section that covers the chest area.

2. Frill the tulle or lace to sew it to the tank top on the cut side. You cut a significant amount of this fabric to go from the breast line and down to cover up your belly.

3. Take ribbon or lace and make frills out of them, too. Wrap these frills on the top of seam between the tank top and tulle to hide it and to decorate your genie blouse.

4. Tuck the ends of the lace frills neatly in the back of the blouse and sew a few small stitches into the ends to secure it in place.

5. Use fabric glue to add spangles anywhere you want on the tank top or the tulle part of the blouse. You can adjust them using a needle and thread and glue them on the blouse to secure them.

Tips & Warnings

• You may also want to put some frills on the décolleté of the blouse to decorate it.
