How to Hook a Dishwasher Drain Line to a Kenmore Disposal
If you decide to add a Kenmore waste disposal to your kitchen sink, you may wonder where the dishwasher drain line, which usually connects to the kitchen sink drain, comes into play. Kenmore disposals have a dishwasher drain outlet fitting. The drain line from the dishwasher connects to the fitting on the disposal instead of the sink drain pipe. A plug blocks any waste from coming out of the fitting on installations where there is no dishwasher. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Switch off the breaker that controls the electrical circuit for the disposal at the main breaker box. Hold a no-touch electrical tester near the wires coming from the bottom of the disposal. Continue only if the tester does not beep.
-
2
Locate the dishwasher drain outlet fitting near the top of the disposal. Insert a flat-blade screwdriver into the fitting until it makes contact with the plastic knock-out plug.
-
-
3
Rap the end of the screwdriver with a hammer to dislodge the knock-out plug from the fitting. Remove the plug from the fitting and discard it.
-
4
Push the end of the dishwasher drain hose onto the dishwasher drain outlet fitting on the disposal.
-
5
Place a hose clamp around the hose and the fitting. Tighten the clamp with a Phillips screwdriver.
-
6
Turn the circuit breaker back on. Observe the hose-to-fitting connection while the dishwasher is running. Tighten the hose clamp further if any leaks are detected.

Tips & Warnings
Some dishwasher manufacturers require that the dishwasher drain hose be connected to an air gap. An air gap prevents disposal waste water from siphoning back into the dishwasher, which can cause odors in the dishwasher. Air gaps are usually mounted on the top of the kitchen sink. Once the dishwasher drain hose is connected to the underside of the air gap, the hose from the air gap should be connected to the dishwasher drain outlet fitting on the disposal. More-detailed instructions should come with the air gap.
