How to Be an ROTC Instructor
The Army Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) recruits and trains young cadets to be Army leaders of the future. The U.S. Army places experienced military personnel as ROTC instructors at more than 270 colleges and universities across the United States. Applicants must have been honorably separated from their military service within the last five years. To apply for an instructor position, complete the application packages, which are split into two phases. After you have applied, the Brigade manager will interview applicants and select instructors. The Army looks for experienced professionals who meet the minimum qualifications in education, training and military experience.

1
Achieve the military rank of NCO, which is an E-6 or above. The position of ROTC instructor is not open to non-military personnel. You do not, however, have to be currently serving in the military. Military education jobs are great second careers for retired military veterans. Every ROTC instructor must possess detailed knowledge of the Army's organizational structure, policies, regulations and procedures. Instructors also need to know basic soldier skills, such as map reading, marksmanship, land navigation, and they must have an understanding of how to conduct military drills and ceremonies.

2
Complete and submit the Army's electronic application (see Resources). This is the Phase I application. In this form, fill out your position preferences, contact information, civilian background and military background. The military background section asks you for your current rank, years of service, last command assignment and a list of your last three military positions. This is not the final application for becoming an ROTC instructor, but you must submit this form before the Army will give you further application instructions via email.

Scan and email all the additional documents requested for the Phase II application. The Army will send you an email after receiving the Phase I application. The email will tell you the documents needed to complete the Phase II application. These might include official documents such as your fingerprints, or documents detailing your recent activities such as a list of past addresses.

4
Pass the standard Army Physical Fitness Test (APFT) both at the time of hire and bi-annually thereafter. ROTC Instructors work partly in a classroom environment, presenting standardized instruction and creative workshops. But they also work in a field environment during training exercises, which requires good physical fitness and health.
