How to Make Rosette Flower Hair Clips
Rosette hair clips are simple but striking accessories for women and girls. Boutique hair accessories often carry a shocking price tag, even for a pair of small hair clips. If you want to achieve boutique style without the boutique price, you can make the clips yourself with basic craft supplies. Ribbon, small embellishments and plain clips cost pennies, which will allow you to create an entire garden of rosette clips for the cost of one boutique set.
Things You'll Need
- 1/2-inch-wide ribbon
- Scissors
- No-fray sealant
- Threaded needle
- Hot glue
- Hair clip
- Flat-back craft crystals
Instructions
-
-
1
Cut a piece of 1/2-inch-wide ribbon that is 6 inches long with scissors.
-
2
Dab no-fray sealant onto each trimmed end of the ribbon to prevent fraying. Allow the product to dry for 10 minutes.
-
-
3
Lay the ribbon vertically on your work surface. Hold the end closest to you in your non-dominant hand.
-
4
Insert a threaded needle from the underside of the ribbon up, through the lower, right corner of the fabric. Push about 1/4 of the needle through the material so that the ribbon is in the middle of the needle.
-
5
Insert the needle 1/8 inch away from the previous insertion spot. The ribbon will fold slightly. The needle should be piercing the ribbon in two places, with about 1/8 inch between the two spots.
-
6
Pull the needle and thread all the way through the ribbon until the thread knot catches on the fabric. This is a running stitch which allows you to make more than one stitch at a time.
-
7
Make a running stitch along the right edge of the ribbon until you reach the opposite end, 6 inches away from your starting spot. The running stitch should look like a dashed line. The ribbon may start to gather on the thread as you work. Leave the threaded needle attached to the ribbon once you finish the running stitch.
-
8
Pull the thread to gather the material in a tight circular shape. The sealed ends of the ribbon should be side-by-side. Stitch the ends together to secure the ribbon in the rosette shape.
-
9
Tie the thread off on the underside of the rosette. Trim the excess thread from the rosette with scissors.
-
10
Apply a peppercorn-sized bead of hot glue to the underside of the rosette. Press the rosette on top of a hair clip -- at the closed or hinged end of the clip.
-
11
Apply a bead of hot glue to the top of the rosette. Press a flat-back craft crystal into the glue.
