How to Crochet a Sock Monkey Animal for Ear Hats

How to Crochet a Sock Monkey Animal for Ear Hats thumbnail
Sock monkeys are even cuter in hat form.

The only thing cuter than a sock monkey is a kid wearing a sock monkey hat. The original sock monkeys were made out of knit socks, but their pattern can easily be adapted for crochet. While any child would be thrilled to receive such a distinctive wardrobe addition, this hat will fit children who wear size 2T to 4T. But you can experiment with larger crochet hooks or heavier yarn if the child you have in mind is older.

Chain four of color B and make a slip stitch to form a loop. Chain and double crochet fifteen in the space, connecting with a slip stitch in the top of the first double crochet. Chain one half-double crochet in each stitch around, connecting with a slip stitch in the first half-double crochet. Chain one half-double crochet once in odd stitches, twice in even stitches, joining with a slip stitch in the first half-double crochet. Chain one half-double crochet once in first and second stitches, twice in third stitch through the entire round, joining with a slip stitch in the first half-double crochet. Chain one and half-double crochet in each stitch around, joining with a slip stitch in the first half-double crochet. Pull the yarn through and cut 6 inches from the last stitch.

    • 2

Attach color B to the first stitch in the last round. Chain one, half-double crochet in each stitch across, joining with a slip stitch in the first half-double crochet. Continue to make rounds in this color until the hat is the desired length. Pull the yarn through the last slip stitch and cut 6 inches from the last stitch. Use the tapestry needle to weave in loose ends.

    • 3

Attach color C with right side facing to the first half double crochet in the last round of color A. Single crochet a full round along the line where color A and color B meet, forming the band of the monkey's hat. Cut the yarn and weave the loose ends in with a tapestry needle.

    • 4

Attach color A eight stitches from the last stitch made. Chain two and double crochet ten. For the next four rows, chain one, turn, decrease, double crochet until the last two stitches, and decrease. Pull the yarn through the last decrease, cut and weave the end through. Begin the other ear flap eight stitches in the other direction from the last stitch in the hat band.

    • 5

Attach color A at the base of one of the ear flaps. Single crochet around the entire hat. Join with a slip stitch in the first single crochet and tie off. Add braids to the ends of the ear flaps if desired.

    • 6

Chain eleven with color A. Work two single crochets into the second chain from the hook. Single crochet in the next eight stitches. Work four single crochets into the last chain. Turn over to work in the back stitches. Single crochet in eight back stitches and work two single crochets into the last back stitch. Turn again and join with a slip stitch in the first chain. Work two single crochets into the first stitch and one single crochet into the next ten stitches. Work two single crochets into each of the final two stitches. Join with a slip stitch and tie off.

    • 7

Thread a tapestry needle with color C. Insert at one end of the initial chain for the mouth and embroider the lips. Tie off on the wrong side. Weave the ends in. Thread the needle with color A and sew the mouth in the center of the hat.

    • 8

Thread the sewing needle with black thread. Sew the buttons above the mouth for eyes.

    • 9

Make two ears as follows: Use color A to chain two. Work six single crochets into the second chain from the hook. Join in the first single crochet with a slip stitch. Chain one and work two single crochets into each single crochet across, joining with a slip stitch. Single crochet in each stitch for three rounds. Cut the yarn about eight inches away from the ear. Use the yarn to sew the ear to the side of the hat.

Tips & Warnings

  • If in doubt about your placement, use crochet markers to mark the first stitch or to estimate where you will attach different parts of the hat.

  • Add a pompom or braids to the top of the hat if you want to decorate it.
