How to Lower the Sheen From Semi-Gloss to Satin

Sand walls and surfaces between paint applications.

Reducing the sheen of a surface from semi-gloss paint to satin may save an interior home design. Semi-gloss paint provides a reflective surface, whereas satin gives off a flat, non-reflective quality. Painting a kitchen wall with semi-gloss paint, for example, may harshly reflect bright sunlight to the discomfort of the all occupants of the house. Removing semi-gloss before applying a satin finish will ensure that the reflective qualities of the former paint are eliminated. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Put on a pair of safety glasses and a dust mask to protect your eyes and lungs. Turn on a box fan to circulate the air. Direct the fan away from the wall so that any dust created does not blow back onto the wall or into the air. Open nearby windows for extra ventilation.

    • 2

Soak the bristles of a synthetic fiber brush into liquid paint stripper. You can purchase a liquid paint stripper – or remover – at any home supply store. Coat the wall or surface with stripper. Allow 30 minutes for the stripper to dry.

    • 3

Sand any surface areas where paint is difficult to remove with coarse sandpaper. Avoid damaging the surface while sanding.

    • 4

Pry open the satin paint can with a flathead screwdriver. Mix the satin paint with a paint stirrer for 30 to 45 seconds to blend any chemical elements that may have settled in the bottom of the can.

    • 5

Pour satin paint into a paint tray. Coat a paint roller with the satin paint. Apply the paint with a zigzag rolling technique until the entire surface is covered in satin paint. Zigzagging prevents the appearance of lines once the paint dries. Allow 12 hours for the paint to dry before touching or handling the surface.
