How to Check if Windows Is Stealing Your Bandwidth?

When you are trying to surf the Web, watch a streaming video or play an online game it can be frustrating when your connection slows down. This slowdown can be caused by a third party application but if you are certain that it is Windows causing the slowdown you can use the network monitor to check and see. This is a small application in Windows that lets you see what processes on your computer are accessing the Internet in real time.

Instructions

    • 1

      Open the Start Menu.

    • 2

Type "resource monitor" and press "Enter."

    • 3

      Click on the "Network" tab.

    • 4

Look in the "Processes with Network Activity" window to view the processes that are currently using network bandwidth. If you note any Microsoft programs (such as svhost.exe, System or Word.exe), then Windows may be utilizing bandwidth that is causing your connection to slow down.
