How to Convert From Excel to a TXT File

One of the features of the Microsoft Excel spreadsheet program allows users to convert an Excel file to a text file. When converting an Excel spreadsheet to a text file, the user is able to choose the delimiter, or the character that separates data values included in the text file. Excel will allow the user to select a comma as the delimiter, for a Comma Separated Value (CSV) file, or a tab as the delimited for a Tab Separated Value (TXT) file.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the Excel file to save as a text file.

    • 2

Click the “File” option on the top navigation bar (or click the Microsoft Office button in Excel 2007).

    • 3

Click the “Save As” option. The File Save dialog box opens.

    • 4

Click the “Save as Type” drop-down box and click the “Comma Separated Value (CSV)” option to save the file as a CSV file, or click the “Tab Separated Value (TXT)" to save the file with the tab delimiter, and the file extension of TXT.

    • 5

Type a name for the file in the “File Name” input box and then click “Save.” The Excel file is exported to a text file.
