How to Get SQL Experience
Experience with Microsoft SQL Server can be a valuable asset professionally, as well as for personal database needs. SQL Server is a complex and constantly evolving database environment, but everyone at all levels of experience in SQL, or Structured Query Language, starts with the basics. The basics of SQL Server can be self-taught at little or no cost. With solid study and practice, any individual with a technical aptitude should be able to gain enough experience to begin working with SQL Server.

1
Purchase a beginner-level SQL book or borrow one from a library. The book should be written specifically for the most current version of Microsoft SQL. Research various beginner-level books at online bookstores that provide user reviews of the product to help determine which book might be best for your learning style.
-
2
Download a free copy of Microsoft SQL Server Express from the Microsoft website. Don't be concerned about "Server" in the product name - SQL Server Express does not need to be installed on server hardware. For educational purposes, it will run fine on any modern Windows PC.
-
-
3
Install Microsoft SQL Server Express. Select all of the default options during the installation, unless you desire installation to a different path.
-
4
Install one or more sample SQL databases. Sample databases can be downloaded from the Microsoft website. Some SQL books may also include sample databases on a DVD or direct you to samples that can be downloaded from the publisher's website using a code included with the book.
-
5
Read and study the SQL book. Practice each of the topics and exercises using the sample databases installed on the Microsoft SQL Server Express system.
-
6
Attend an SQL class at a university, community college, or adult education class. An experienced instructor can help a beginner advance to the next level of experience.
