Instructions

    • 1

Trim a piece of netting or tulle to your desired veil length.

    • 2

Brace a fabric-covered headband upright on your work surface with heavy objects like books. Keep access to the top, arched part of the headband open, so that you can reach the underside of the arch freely.

    • 3

Hold the veil material as it will hang on the finished headpiece. The top edge of the material is what you will affix to the headband.

    • 4

Locate the center point on the top edge of the material. Mark that spot by pinching two fingers on it.

    • 5

Press the marked center point to the underside of the headband. Match the center points of the fabric and headband. Secure the fabric and headband with your fingers.

    • 6

Apply a small bead of hot glue on top of the fabric, on the center points of both pieces. The glue will settle through the open weave of the fabric and affix it to the headband. Allow the glue to set for two minutes before proceeding.

    • 7

Affix the rest of the fabric to the underside of the headband with small beads of hot glue. Gather the material gradually as you affix it. Do not affix material within 1 inch of either end of the headband -- the sections that sit behind your ears.

    • 8

Unroll about 12 inches of ribbon. Hold it against the underside of the band to to measure a piece of ribbon 1 inch longer than the headband. Cut the piece of ribbon from the spool with scissors.

    • 9

Lay the ribbon on your work surface. Fold a 1/2-inch hem at one end of the ribbon. Apply a small bead of hot glue to secure the folded hem in place. Repeat the process on the other end of the ribbon. This will keep the ribbon from fraying.

    • 10

Apply a small bead of hot glue to the underside of the headband, in the center. Press the center of the ribbon into the glue.

    • 11

Apply a narrow line of glue to the underside of the headband. Press the ribbon firmly into the glue. The ribbon will protect the veil from friction that might pull it loose while you wear the headpiece.

    • 12

Clip clothespins onto the headband and ribbon to smooth the glue and ribbon as it sets.

    • 13

Affix embellishments to the top of the headband, as desired. Glue crystals and beads to the surface in a pattern or a solid layer. Pin rhinestone brooches through the material of the headband to create a glamorous, jeweled accessory. Tie a bow with ribbon and secure it on the band with glue.

Tips & Warnings

  • Cut a piece of tulle or netting that measures 12 inches by 9 inches, to make a fascinator-style headpiece. Cut a 12- by 24-inch piece of material for a shoulder-length veil. Cut a piece that is 18 inches by 42 inches for a fingertip veil. Cut an 18- by 66-inch piece of material for a longer veil. Tulle and netting do not fray, so you can always trim the length, as needed, after you finish the headpiece. The first measurement of each piece (12 or 18 inches) is the top edge of the veil.
