Show team spirit while keeping your hands warm with a felt beer cozy.

Cozies aren't just for tea kettles anymore; they can insulate beverages of all kinds and express some personal flair if you design one yourself. For the beer enthusiast, a cozy made from felt will keep the lager cold and the hands warm during the game, and you can decorate the cozy with your favorite team's logo. Try this project for a Father's Day gift, or make several for guests at your next dinner party, personalized with their names.

Instructions

    • 1

Roll a beer can up in the longer strip of felt until it overlaps by about half an inch and mark this spot with a dot from a marker. Decide how tall you want the cozy to be. If you don't want the whole can covered, use a ruler to make a straight line and cut horizontally through the strip of felt so it is shorter.

    • 2

Unroll the felt and use the side without the marker as the outside of the cozy. Cut out shapes from felt of different colors to make team logos or to spell out phrases. Use cookie cutters as templates and trace around them to make neater designs that will be easy to cut out. Lay out your design on the strip of felt until it is arranged just how you want it. Dab small amounts of hot glue around the edges of the felt shapes and press them on however you planned. Allow the glue to dry.

Wrap the cozy around a beer can and mark a spot about half an inch past where the ends overlap. Use a dab of hot glue to adhere a button on this spot. On the underside of the top flap, hot glue one end of the yarn. Loop the yarn around the button and hot glue the other end of the yarn next to the first end.

    • 4

Cut a pad like those used on the bottoms of shoes for traction into a thin strip. Flip the felt strip over and glue the non-stick strip in a line along the center of the cozy.

Tips & Warnings

  • The same technique can be used to cover beer in bottles; simply replace the beer can with a beer bottle in the steps.

  • If you'd like a bottom to the cozy, cover the bottom of a coaster with felt and glue the longer strip around it.

  • Use borders or edging from a craft store and glue them along the top and bottom of the cozy.

  • A small piece of leather or twine could substitute for the yarn, and the ends could be stitched into place. Instead of using the button-close method, you can hot glue a seam to close the cozy into a circle.
