How to Crochet a Ruffle Border

How to Crochet a Ruffle Border thumbnail
A ruffled border may be the perfect edging for your crochet project.

The final step in many crochet projects is to stitch a border around the edges. Sometimes a ruffled border may be the ideal edging, especially for an afghan or baby blanket. Use the same yarn you used for the rest of the piece, or make a contrasting border with a different yarn color. The technique will involve triple-crochet stitches.

Instructions

    • 1

Make a slipknot and slide it onto the crochet hook. Tighten the slipknot around the crochet hook gently.

    • 2

Insert the crochet hook through any stitch around the edge of the crocheted piece. Yarn over the crochet hook and pull the loop through the loop on the hook to attach the yarn to the crocheted piece.

    • 3

Chain four stitches. Crochet two triple-crochet stitches in every stitch. Stop at the final stitch before a corner.

    • 4

Crochet four triple-crochet stitches in the final stitch before the corner. Crochet six triple-crochet stitches in the corner stitch. Crochet four triple-crochet stitches in the first stitch after the corner.

    • 5

Crochet two triple-crochet stitches in each stitch until you come to another corner.

    • 6

Repeat the same corner technique and then crochet two triple-crochet stitches in each stitch. Work until you come back around to the starting point.

    • 7

Join the final triple-crochet stitch and the beginning chain with a slipstitch.

    • 8

Cut the yarn off to leave a 4-inch tail. Yarn over the crochet hook once and pull the loop through the remaining loop on the crochet hook. Pull the yarn tightly. Thread the tail through the eye of the yarn needle. Insert the yarn needle through four triple-crochet stitches and pull it all the way through to bury the yarn tail. Clip off the excess yarn tail to finish the ruffle.
