How to Add a Tilde in Word for Mac

Non-English languages that use the Latin alphabet often use accent marks on letters to indicate the proper pronunciation of the word. For example, written German includes umlauts over some vowels, and Spanish uses a tilde over vowels and consonants in certain words. When you type these words in Microsoft Word 2011 for Mac using the American English keyboard, you must insert the special character in the word from the Symbol panel in Word. You can also enter a tilde or other special character with the Keyboard and Character Viewer in Mac OS X, or, for the letter "n" alone, use a shortcut with the "Option" key.

Instructions

  1. From the Symbol Panel

    • 1

      Open Microsoft Word.

    • 2

Type a word that requires a tilde. Highlight the letter you want to replace.

    • 3

Click “Insert.” Click “Symbol” and then “Symbol Browser.”

    • 4

Click “Accents” in the drop-down menu, scroll to the letter you want to replace and click it. For example, if you're typing “El Nino,” highlight the lowercase “n” in “Nino,” open the “Accents” list in the Media Browser, scroll to the lowercase "n" with a tilde over it and click to replace the unaccented "n."

From the Keyboard and Character Viewer

    • 5

Open System Preferences, click “Language & Text” and click the “Input Sources” tab.

    • 6

Click the “Keyboard & Character Viewer” check box.

    • 7

Click the Flag icon in the ribbon toolbar and click “Show Character Viewer” while you're in Word or any other program.

    • 8

Click “Accented Latin,” scroll to the letter you want to add or replace, click it to highlight it and click “Insert.”

Tips & Warnings

  • For a shortcut for the letter "n," hold down the "Option" key and press the "n" key simultaneously to produce a lowercase letter "n" topped by a tilde.
