How to Not Get Caught Up in Drama

How to Not Get Caught Up in Drama thumbnail
Sometimes it's necessary to walk away from relationships filled with drama.

He did what? She said what? It can be easy to get caught up in the drama of everyday life: people fighting, issues at work, relationship problems, disagreements and hurt feelings. However, getting caught up increases your stress and worsens your mood. While shutting off drama may be hard at first, keeping things in perspective and not letting the drama get to you improves your emotions and everyday life.

Instructions

    • 1

Lean toward logic instead of emotions. Your first emotional reaction to drama may be anger or sadness. Instead, look at the logic of the situation. Take out the emotion and look at the facts.

    • 2

Act skeptical toward rumors, as rumors may be false. Consider the trustworthiness of the information source.

    • 3

Look at the other side of the issue. While “David didn’t show up for his date with Rebecca” may be true, it might not be due to David being a jerk, but rather he lost his car keys or had a family emergency that precluded him from showing up.

    • 4

Take time out from stressful situations. Give yourself a few minutes a day to unwind and get away from the drama of everyday life. Take a walk, read a book or just sit and relax. Turn off your phone and computer.

    • 5

Accept that some things are out of your control. You can’t solve every piece of drama that comes your way or your friends’ way, so getting upset over it wastes your emotions and energy.

    • 6

Calm down. Count to 10. Avoid taking quick action when presented with drama. Don’t add further drama to the mix by overreacting or joining a conflict in which you weren’t previously involved.

    • 7

Distance yourself from people who cause drama. Some friends and co-workers may be drama mills, doling out drama, because they enjoy it. If that’s not you, distance yourself from these people or say politely that you don’t wish to get caught up in the drama anymore.
