How to Crochet Earrings Using Wire

How to Crochet Earrings Using Wire thumbnail
Wire snips are useful to clip wire ends.

While yarn is the obvious material of choice for crocheted items, you can get creative with your materials and techniques to create unusual objects. Thin-gauge wire, crocheted using single or double crochet stitches, creates unique jewelry pieces, such as pendants, cuff bracelets or earrings. If you’ve never worked with wire or are new to crochet, try making a pair of earring using inexpensive craft wire to get the feel of the stiff, inelastic wire before upgrading to precious metal wire.

Things You'll Need

  • Size K (6.50 millimeter) crochet hook
  • 3 feet of 26- to 28-gauge wire
  • Wire snips
  • Needle nose pliers
  • 2 jump rings
  • Earring hooks

Instructions

    • 1

Bend the wire in half, then use the wire snips to clip the wire into two equal-size pieces.

    • 2

Make a loop at one end of a wire and twist to secure. This will act as the slip knot for your chain row.

    • 3

Chain 6 to form the foundation row.

    • 4

Turn the work, bending the wire to lead correctly, as yarn would. Single crochet across the row.

    • 5

Turn the work, do not chain as you usually world in crochet and single crochet across the row. Repeat this six more times.

    • 6

Remove your crochet hook and thread the remaining wire back through the last stitch. Use the pliers to help pull, if necessary. Clip excess wire and pinch down using the pliers to finish. Make sure any sharp wire ends are folded back and squeezed tight using the pliers.

    • 7

Make a loop using the second length of wire. Chain, then single crochet as you did for the first earring piece. Clip excess wire and pinch to finish as before.

    • 8

Open the jump rings by twisting the slightly using the pliers. Slip the jump ring onto a corner of an earring piece and place one earring hook onto the jump ring. Close the jump ring using the pliers.

    • 9

Open the other jump ring and attach the second earring piece and hook. Twist closed.

Tips & Warnings

  • Gauge is not critical for this project. However, try to use the same tension on both earrings to keep them as uniform as possible. Don’t worry if your earring pieces don’t match exactly. The slight differences between them are part of their homemade charm. You can embellish your earrings by stringing small beads onto the wire before crocheting, then incorporate a bead or two into each stitch.

  • Wire can “ding” and scratch your crochet hook.
