Instructions

    • 1

Measure the width of the roof overhang with the tape measure. If you have a gabled roof, you will need to measure both sides of the lookouts down from the peak.

    • 2

Transfer the measurement of the roof overhang to a 2-inch-by-4-inch board. Cut one or more boards by using the miter saw to obtain the width that is needed for the overhang framing.

    • 3

Set the blade of the miter saw to 45 degrees. Cut one end of two 2-inch-by-4-inch boards for the peak, if you have a gabled roof.

    • 4

Position the cut 2-inch-by-4-inch fly rafter against the “lookout” boards. Secure the fly rafter to each of the “lookout” boards with nails using the nail gun.

    • 5

Repeat this step to frame additional fly rafters to a roof overhang.

Tips & Warnings

  • Cut the end of the 2-inch-by-4-inch boards flush with the edge of the roof.
