How to Make a Wooden Doll Hammock

It's easy to make a visually attractive custom wooden doll hammock to store and organize your dolls. Make the hammock look realistic by using a combination of wood and nylon netting. Dolls are not too heavy, but counterweights need to be placed on the bases of the hammock to support the weight of the dolls. If you stack more than one doll on the hammock, add additional weight to the base.

Instructions

    • 1

Make the bases of the hammock. Cut a 2-inch plywood sheet into two 2-by-2-inch square pieces, using a hand saw. Make the poles of the hammock. Cut a 1-inch-diameter wooden dowel into two pieces with 6-inch-lengths. Make the supports of the hammock. Cut a 1-inch plywood sheet into two 3-by-1-inch pieces. Make the netting of the hammock. Cut nylon netting into 3-by-10-inch piece, using scissors.

    • 2

Drill a 1-inch hole in the middle of the bases, using a power drill and 1-inch drill bit. Insert the ends of the poles into the holes. Place two half-pound counterweights on each end of the bases. The counterweights balance the hammock and support the weight of the doll.

    • 3

Make the connection holes. Drill 1/16th inch holes into each end of the supports, using a power drill and 1/16th inch drill bit.

    • 4

Glue the ends of the netting to the edges of the supports, using a hot glue gun. Let the hot glue dry for 20 seconds.

    • 5

Make the fish wire support indentations. Cut half-inch indentations into the poles using a utility knife. Position the indentations two inches below the top of the poles on the back side of the poles.

    • 6

Insert one end of a fish wire into one connection hole and tie knots at the end of the fish wire. The knots should be large enough to block the connection hole. Pull the fish wire around the pole and place it into the fish wire support indentation. Insert the opposite end of the fish wire into the other connection hole and tie knots at the end of the fish wire. Cut the excess fish wire, using scissors. Repeat for the other support.

    • 7

Add double-sided tape to left and right sides of a 1-by-1-by-1-inch expanded foam cube. Press one taped side of the foam cube on the outer edge of a pole to attach it. Position the taped-foam cube 1-inch from the top end of the pole. Press other side of the taped-foam cube to the wall. Repeat this step on the other pole if you want to attach the hammock between two walls.

Tips & Warnings

  • Warm the hot glue gun for three minutes.

  • The nozzle of the hot glue gun is extremely hot and can burn skin on contact. Use caution.
