How to Relaunch an Evolution Backend Process

Evolution stores calendar data in a back-end process.

The GNOME desktop for personal computers includes a personal information manager called Evolution. Evolution requires a back-end process, the Evolution Data Server, which stores calendar and contact information for the application. Occasionally, the Evolution Data Server process needs to be restarted. Restarting involves safely ending all Evolution background processes, including the back-end, then running the application again. Restarting the Evolution Data Server fixes certain problems with Evolution and applies the latest settings.

Instructions

    • 1

Open a terminal window. Begin by moving the computer mouse's cursor to the top left Activities corner or pressing the windows key, and then type "terminal" into the search bar and press the "Enter" key on the computer's keyboard. You also may access a terminal through the application categories, the dash or the keyboard shortcut "Alt+F2."

    • 2

Shut down Evolution and all of its background processes safely by typing "evolution --force-shutdown" into the terminal's command line and then pressing the "Enter" key. This action saves altered data and stops the back-end.

    • 3

Verify that the back-end process stopped by entering "ps aux | grep evolution-data-server" into the terminal's command line and then pressing the "Enter" key. If the process is still running, you will see a line for the Evolution Data Server process.

    • 4

Restart the Evolution Data Server by typing "evolution-data-server&" into the terminal's command line and then pressing the "Enter" key. The ampersand, &, makes the command run in the background.

    • 5

Move the mouse cursor to the top left Activities corner or press the windows key to begin running Evolution, Type "evolution" and press the "Enter" key. With the back-end process running again, Evolution should work successfully.

Tips & Warnings

  • Configuration changes you made previously will apply after restarting Evolution Data Server.

  • The Evolution Data Server also restarts whenever the computer restarts.
