How to Make Sequin Rhinestone Appliques
Appliques -- little decals whose name comes from a French word that means “to put on” -- are like ordinary patches in many ways, except for their purpose. While an ordinary patch is used to mend or conceal rips or tears in fabrics, an applique is sewn onto clothing, curtains, drapery, fashion accessories or other fabric items to add embellishment, detail and design to a garment or material. Make your own appliques with sequins and rhinestones for decorative patches with glitzy style.

- Pinking shears
- Fabric marker
- Stencil

Use a stencil and fabric marker to trace the shape of your applique patch onto the underside of a fabric swatch.

Cut the shape from the fabric swatch using pinking shears to prevent frayed fabric edges.

Sew small sequins onto the applique, stitching the embellishments onto the fabric through the hole in the center of the sequin.

Apply rhinestones to the applique with fabric glue. Allow to dry completely.

Sew your finished applique to fabric materials for a bold, textured or elegant design.

Tips & Warnings
Stitch sequins along the edges of the applique for a vibrant border design that also conceals cut fabric edges.
Use rhinestones sparingly to create an elegant applique, or use many rhinestones for a more glitzy design.
Cut stars, hearts, rectangles or circles from fabric swatches and sew them onto clothing or other fabric materials in interesting patterns for bold or playful applique designs.
Sew the raw, cut edges of the applique fabric by folding the edges 1 centimeter under the fabric and stitching along the folds to create a neat seam before adding embellishments.
Use appliques to embellish curtains, blankets, sweaters, scarves, T-shirts, purses, pillows or other fabric materials to add an element of design to plain items.
