How to Make a Popsicle Stick Horse

Popsicle sticks can be used for many purposes, and they are particularly effective in modeling. Popsicle sticks can make sturdy structures, and even can be stained for a professional finish. Most types of glue will work for Popsicle stick models, though wood glue, white glue and hot glue secure the sticks particularly well for projects such as making a stick horse.

Instructions

    • 1

Build the skeleton of the horse by gluing three Popsicle sticks into a triangular prism. This will form the spine of the horse.

    • 2

Glue a Popsicle stick vertically on both sides of the prism at the front and back to form the basis for the legs. Let the piece dry completely.

    • 3

Cut a Popsicle stick in half, then glue one half vertically to the front of the prism to form the neck.

    • 4

Cut two Popsicle sticks in thirds, then glue them into triangular prisms, with the shortest ends forming the corners. Let the prisms dry, then glue them together with the longest sides running parallel to each other. Glue the back of the two prisms to the front of the neck stick to form the skull.

    • 5

Cut three Popsicle sticks in half, then soak them in water so that they bend easier. Bend the six pieces into semi-circles, then vertically glue three on each side of the prism along where the body of the horse will be.

    • 6

Cut a Popsicle stick into fifths, then soak the pieces in water. Bend two pieces, then attach the pieces onto the left and right sides of the skull. Bend one more piece, then glue to the top of the head. Allow these pieces to dry completely.

    • 7

Bend the last two pieces, then attach them to form the nose of the horse. Cut the rounded edge off one of the Popsicle sticks, then cut the end in half. Glue the triangles onto the head as ears.

    • 8

Soak four to 10 Popsicle sticks in water to form the sides of the horse, as required by the size of your model. Bend two to three sticks to form the rear of the horse, then attach them at the back of the model.

    • 9

Bend the remaining sticks to form the sides of the horse. Glue the sticks into place, horizontally down the sides of the horse, so that the sticks sit side to side.

    • 10

Cut three sticks into quarters, then cut two of the quarters in half. Soak the pieces in water. Bend the pieces, then attach them to the top of the legs. Sit the sticks side to side in descending size to form the thighs of the horse.

    • 11

Cut four rounded tips off of the Popsicle sticks. Glue the rounded tips on to the bottom of the legs to make the hooves. Stain the model, if desired.
