How to Lay Grout Between Flagstones

Grouting the spaces between flagstones is a little different than standard grout applications for regular tiles. The main difference is that with regular tiles, you have thin, consistent grout lines and a smooth surface over which you can scrape the grout to press it into the lines. This won't work with flagstone, as the lines are wider and more varied than in regular tile. For this reason, you should use a grout bag instead of a grout float, so that you can target the grout directly into the lines. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Combine grout and water in the bucket, in the ratio called for on the grout packaging. Make enough to fill the grout bag, which is usually usually about one-half gallon.

    • 2

Mix the grout and water with your drill and mixing attachment for five minutes, getting it to the consistency of thick mud.

    • 3

Let the mixed grout set in the bucket for 10 minutes. Blend it again with the mixing attachment for three more minutes.

    • 4

Scoop the grout from the bucket into the bag, through the open back end, using a wooden spoon. Close the bag.

    • 5

Hold the tip of the grout bag over the first space between the flagstones, at one end of the line. Squeeze the bag, pushing out the grout into the line.

    • 6

Pull the bag backward along the line while continuing to squeeze, so it lays a line of grout into the space. Follow the contours of the line to the end, filling it completely.Use a damp sponge to wipe off any grout that gets on the surface of the stones.

    • 7

Run the back of your wooden spoon over the new grout to flatten it in the line.

    • 8

Repeat for each line between the flagstones. Let the grout set for 24 hours before walking on it.
