How to Crochet Hexagons
With standard crochet stitches, you can create a variety of shapes to make afghans and other projects. A hexagon has six sides, making it a symmetrical shape, suitable for crocheting with yarn. If you possess basic crochet skills, you have the expertise necessary to crochet hexagons. Choose yarn in the color you desire and crochet neat and even hexagons to use in yarn projects.

Make a slipknot with the yarn and place the knot onto the crochet hook. Crochet seven chain stitches and join the first chain and the last chain with a slipstitch to form a ring.

Chain three stitches and crochet 17 double-crochet stitches around the ring. Join the third chain and the top of the last double-crochet stitch with a slipstitch to finish the round.

Chain three stitches to begin the second round.

Crochet one double-crochet in the next stitch. Crochet two chains and crochet one double-crochet stitch in the same stitch -- this forms a V-stitch, which will create the hexagon shape. Crochet a single double-crochet in the next two stitches.

Repeat the previous step four times around the ring. Crochet a double-crochet in the next stitch and join the third chain and the top of the last double-crochet stitch with a slipstitch.

Chain three stitches to begin the third round.

Crochet one double-crochet stitch in the next stitch. Crochet a V-stitch in the V-stitch from the previous row. Crochet one double-crochet stitch in the next four stitches.

Repeat the previous step four times around the ring. Crochet a V-stitch in the previous V-stitch, crochet one double-crochet in the next two stitches and join the third chain and the top of the last double-crochet stitch with a slipstitch to finish the round.

Cut off the yarn to leave a 4-inch tail. Yarn over the crochet hook and pull the loop all the way through the one loop remaining on the hook. Tighten the yarn snugly. Thread the end of the yarn tail through the yarn needle and insert the yarn needle through about five double-crochet stitches. Pull the needle all the way through and clip off the excess yarn to bury the yarn tail in the crochet stitches.
