How to Keep Minitwists Shiny for African-American Hair

Twists are formed by twisting two strands of hair around each other. Pomade is applied to African-American hair before it's twisted, and used to set the strands into the twist formation. When twists are first done, the hair is typically very shiny from the fresh pomade, but over time, it may begin to look dull. The scales that make up the cuticle in African-American hair don't lie flat, as with other hair types, which prevents it from reflecting as much light and causes it to look dull. To keep your twists shiny, you must apply a product that helps the cuticle reflect light. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Fill a spray bottle halfway with 1/4 cup of aloe vera gel. Add 2 tbsp. of glycerin-free and silicone-free leave-in conditioner, then fill up the rest of the bottle with rose water. Aloe vera and rose water restore the hair, and the leave-in conditioner will add shine. Spray the conditioner all over your twists daily; wet the hair but don't saturate it. This will add shine to your twists as well as condition them.

Rub shea butter on the minitwists using your hands. Shea butter can be found at beauty supply and natural food stores. Purchase the product in an unrefined or refined form; avoid highly refined or processed shea butter as it has lost many of its useful natural components. The shea butter will condition the hair, seal the ends of the twists to keep them from unraveling and add shine.

Apply a leave-in conditioner for natural hairstyles to the hair. Rub the leave-in conditioner through your hair every morning.
