How to Make Frosty the Snowman's Hat
When the winter season rolls in and Christmas draws near, no doubt "Frosty the Snowman" will make an appearance on the radio or on a holiday television special. Whether you need a stovepipe hat for a class production of the classic winter tale or a decoration for a Frosty-themed party, a black top hat is a craft that uses everyday art materials.
Things You'll Need
- Large paper plate
- Black acrylic paint
- Paintbrush
- Black felt
- Liquid school glue
- White pencil crayon
- Scissors
- Crafting knife
- 2 sheets of black construction paper
Instructions
-

1
Paint the paper plate black on both sides, and allow it to dry.
-
2
Lay the two pieces of construction paper down side by side horizontally, and glue them together where the shorter sides meet. Allow the glue to dry completely.
-
-
3
Roll the paper horizontally to make a tube, and run a bead of glue along one side. Put the unglued side of the paper on top of the side with glue on it, and press down to secure it. The circumference of the tube should be about 2 inches smaller than the circumference of the paper plate.
-
4
Place the tube on the center of the plate, and draw around it with the white pencil or crayon to make a circle. This is where the stovepipe portion will meet the brim; but first measure the head hole on the bottom of the paper plate, and cut out the appropriate size using a crafting knife.
-
5
Apply glue to the white circle, and affix the tube to the plate by holding it in place on top of the glue until it dries.
-
6
Cut two strips from the black felt that are each 2 inches wide. Glue one strip around the base of the tube where it meets the plate to make a hatband. This will not completely encircle the bottom of the tube. Trim the other piece of felt so that it covers the gap and glue it in position.

Tips & Warnings
Use green construction paper, green paint and yellow felt to make a leprechaun hat for St. Patrick's day. Alternatively, the black version can double as Abe Lincoln's famous stovepipe hat for a school play.
