How to Make Birds with Toilet Paper Tubes
One of the most effective and engaging ways to teach children about reusing and recycling materials is creating simple art projects with what would otherwise end up in the trash. Save a few cardboard toilet paper tubes and teach kids about re-using items while making colorful birds. Toilet paper tube birds do not require much in the way of special crafting supplies and are fairly simple to make.
Things You'll Need

- Scissors
- Hot glue gun/sticks
- Feathers
- Craft "googly" eyes

1
Lay the toilet paper tube on top of a piece of brightly colored construction paper. Make a pencil mark on the paper to indicate the length of the tube.
-
2
Cut a long strip of construction paper that is roughly the same length as the toilet paper tube. Wrap this piece of paper around the tube and secure it with hot glue – this is the bird's body.

-
3
Attach two large feathers to the tube to serve as the bird’s wings. A dab of hot glue will keep them in place.
-
4
Cut two bird feet out of construction paper and glue them to the bottom of the toilet paper roll.
-
5
Cut a square out of construction paper and fold two corners down to create a triangle. Fold the remaining straight part inward to make a simple beak shape – glue the beak to the bird’s face. A good size for a proportionate beak is 2-by-2 inches, but you can make yours smaller or larger if desired.
-
6
Attach two googly craft eyes to the bird with a couple of drops of hot glue.
