DIY Linoleum Block Press

A linoleum block press can help you make your home prints more consistent and professional looking. Linoleum etching can create interesting prints, but requires considerable pressure to produce a sharp, clear image. You can create your own home press with easily accessible parts at a very low cost and start producing your own prints.

Instructions

    • 1

Place two plywood pieces side by side, with the 10-inch sides facing each other, approximately 2 inches apart.

    • 2

Measure the flaps of the hinges and cut out four pieces of matte board a bit wider and longer than the flaps.

    • 3

Place matte board pieces on both pieces of plywood where you wish the hinges to be, then screw the hinges into the wood with a screwdriver, screwing through the matte board. The matte board is meant to raise the hinges enough to provide an even, flat pressure on the linoleum tile.

    • 4

Cut a piece of wood molding about 10 inches long, then screw it to the bottom side of the smaller piece of plywood to form a handle 6 inches long.

    • 5

Attach plastic tabs at the bottom of the smaller piece of plywood, next to the hinges. Use brads and a hammer to attach only at the bottom of the tabs. These will act as clips to hold your paper in place.

    • 6

Nail small pieces of lath wood into the base piece of plywood just above the tip of the hinge to form an "L" shape to hold the linoleum block in place.

Tips & Warnings

  • Attach your linoleum etching to a thin piece of wood and place in the frame you made on the base to hold it into place.
