DIY Shelf Mounts

The term “shelving mounts” is often used to describe shelving brackets that hold a shelf in place when mounted to a wall or cabinet wall. These mounts ensure the shelf hangs evenly, but they also provide a level of support to the shelf, especially when mounted to the wall. Shelves mounted to a wall without brackets or supports may result in wall damage and broken shelves and personal items, since a shelf without brackets can hold very little weight. Build your own shelf mounts before hanging a shelf to a wall to ensure optimal support. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Lay the plywood sheet down. Place the ruler on the plywood sheet and draw two rectangular shapes measuring 8 inches by 2 inches. These two pieces will serve as the base of the shelf mount. In addition, draw one additional piece measuring 2 inches in width by at least 12 inches in length.

    • 2

Cut the three pieces using the table saw. Sand all three pieces using medium-grit sandpaper. You need three pieces per shelf mount, so create several identical pieces for additional shelf mounts.

    • 3

Place the two identical pieces in an L-shape figure. Use the screwdriver and one 1-inch screw to connect the two pieces by overlapping one end of a piece on the other. The overlapping piece must be lined up to the wall upon installation.

    • 4

Place the third piece across the L-shape to make a triangle. Line the ends of the third piece to the ends of the L-shape pieces. Draw a 45-degree line on the third piece – on both ends – so it will connect evenly to the L-shape in an even triangle. Cut the ends of the third piece and sand them slightly to remove splinters.

    • 5

Slide this third piece in between the L-shape sides to create a triangle. Attach this third piece by inserting one screw into each side piece, so the screws reach into third wooden piece. Repeat the cutting and assembly procedures for additional shelf mounts.
