Convert stretchy leggings into a mermaid tail.

The Mermaid Parade at Coney Island in New York City inspires thousands of unique and creative mermaid costumes. Those on floats are able to wear closed, sealed tails. Instructions

    • 1

Use a seam ripper to tear the inside seam of the leggings. Remove all loose threads.

    • 2

Turn the leggings to the side and trim excess fabric near the hip. Turn the fabric inside out and sew up each side with a sewing machine. Backstitch to ensure the seams hold.

    • 3

Make loose stitches with a needle and thread and gather the end of a 2-by-3-foot strip of tulle. Tie a knot to keep the end gathered. Repeat for a second strip of tulle.

    • 4

Sew the first strip of tulle to one side of the inside of the skirt bottom. Sew the second strip of tulle to the other side.

    • 5

Sew sequins to the skirt and tulle. Coat the entire garment lightly with spray adhesive and sprinkle glitter over the surface. Allow it to dry before wearing.

    • 6

Sew sequins to a coordinating bikini top. Spray a light coating of adhesive and sprinkle glitter over the top.
