How to Make Curtain Panels With Rings Attached

Use curtains to protect your privacy and to add a touch of personal texture to your home. Among the easiest curtains to make are curtains that are hung from rings, and it is possible to make up these curtains in the space of an evening if you are familiar with sewing. Make simple curtains that still drape elegantly across your windows, giving your room a personal and handmade touch.

Things You'll Need

• Curtain rod
• Measuring tape
• Fabric
• Scissors
• Sewing machine
• Thread to match fabric
• Needle (optional)
• Curtain clip rings

Instructions

1. Mount the curtain rod of your choice on the window.

2. Measure the distance from the curtain rod to where the curtain should fall, using a measuring tape, and add 1 inch. This is measurement A, which designates the length of your curtain. You may choose to have the curtain fall to the window sill or the floor.

3. Measure the width of the window from edge to edge and multiply by 1.5. This is measurement B, which designates the width of the curtain.

4. Cut a rectangle of fabric with a pair of sharp scissors, using measurements A and B.

5. Fold all the raw edges down twice, approximately 1/4 inch both times, and pin them flat.

6. Sew all of the folded edges flat using a sewing machine, removing the pins as you go. You may also hand-sew these edges using a needle and thread if you wish.

7. Clip curtain clip rings to the top of the curtain, spacing them evenly. Ideally, there should be 4 to 6 inches between each ring. Slide the rings on the curtain rod and hang it on the window.

Tips & Warnings

• Sheets and painter’s drop cloths are excellent curtains that you do not need to hem.
