DIY Glass Retainer Clip

Whether you are sick of hearing the rattling of glass when you close your glass cabinet doors or want a safer environment for your children, build your own glass retainer clips. Glass retainer clips screw into the outer surfaces of the glass, such as wood or plastic, and hold the glass steady. Without glass retainer clips, there is nothing to stop the glass from vibrating or moving within the frame.

Instructions

    • 1

Make the base of the glass retainer clip. Cut a half-inch aluminum sheet to the dimensions of 2-by-1-inch, using a table saw and carbide-tipped blade. File the edges of the cut aluminum, using a metal file. Cut pieces of metal are sharp and can penetrate skin on contact.

    • 2

Place one end of the base vertically into a vice grip. Secure the opposite end with pliers and bend the base towards you. The base should have a slight “V” shape.

    • 3

Make the screw hole. Place one end of the base on a flat surface. Hold the opposite end of the base with pliers. Drill a 1/3-inch hole near the end of the base, using a power drill and 1/3-inch carbide-tipped drill bit. Position the hole 1/2 inch from the end of the base.

    • 4

Make the retainer hole. Hold the screw hole end of the base with pliers. Place the opposite end of the base on a flat surface. Drill 1/3-inch hole near the end of the base, using a power drill and 1/3-inch carbide-tipped drill bit. Position the hole1/2 inch from the end of the base.

    • 5

Position the base in an upside-down “V”shape. Insert 1/3-inch rubber stopper through the bottom of the retainer hole. Place the rubber stopper over the glass. Drill a 1/4-inch pilot hole through the screw hole into the non-glass surface of the glass frame. Use a power drill and quarter-inch drill bit. Insert 1/3-inch wood screw into the pilot hole and attach the screw, using a screwdriver.

Tips & Warnings

  • Substitute the rubber stopper with any soft material, such as silicone or latex, that constricts vibrations.

  • Wear protective gloves, mask and goggles when handling a table saw, power drill and cut metal.
