How to Delete Originals in iPhoto

iPhoto, the image editing program available exclusively to Mac users, aims to provide a place where people organize and improve their photographs. After making changes to an image file, if you save a copy of the new image you may find you no longer need the original. To free up space on your computer hard drive, delete the original file. Note, however, that deleting an image from iPhoto also removes it from your computer all together.

Instructions

    • 1

Open iPhoto on your computer and click on the "Photos" link in the "Library" section of the source list, which runs vertically down the side of your iPhoto window.

    • 2

Click once on the photo you want to delete to select it.

    • 3

Hit the "Delete" key on your keyboard to send the photograph to the iPhoto trash bin. Alternatively, click on the photo and drag it over to the "Trash" icon in the iPhoto source list.

    • 4

Go to "iPhoto" in the menu bar and select "Empty Trash." The image will be deleted for good--unless you have the Time Machine back up system on your computer. Time Machine is the only program that can retrieve photos deleted from the iPhoto trash, so delete original photos with care if you don't have access to Time Machine.

Tips & Warnings

  • Restore a photo you send to the trash -- before the trash is emptied -- by clicking on the "Trash" icon and then the photo. Select "Photos" and then "Restore to Photo Library."
