How to Use a Meta Tag Manager

Meta Tag Manager is a WordPress plugin that allows blog owners to authenticate ownership of their blog with major search engines like Google and Yahoo! Ownership is verified by inserting a pre-created search engine meta tag into the Meta Tag Manager. The search engine will then crawl and find the tag saved in the code of the page. After ownership has been verified, a blog owner can utilize tools to promote and administer their blogs in Google and Yahoo!

  1. Install Meta Tag Manager

      Click the Meta Tag Manager download link in the right of the home page. Allow the "meta-tag-manager.zip" folder to download to your computer.

      Double-click on the downloaded "meta-tag-manager.zip" file to open it. Drag the entire "meta-tag-manager" folder inside to your desktop.

      Log into your WordPress account and select the "Plugin" tab in the Dashboard.

      Click "Add New" from the Plugins menu.

      Choose the Meta Tag Manager zip file in the browser window. Click "Open." The plugin will upload to WordPress and be listed in the Plugins directory.

      Find the uploaded Meta Tag Manager plugin in the Plugins menu, and click "Activate."

    Use Meta Tag Manager

      Go to Google's Webmaster Tools page or Yahoo's Site Authentication page. Log in with your email and password. Enter the URL that you want Google or Yahoo! to crawl and submit it. The site will be added to the list of sites in your account.

      Click "Verify This Site" or "Authenticate" next to the site that you want to verify once it has been added to your list of websites. Follow the prompts to create the meta tag. Then highlight it with the mouse, and press "Ctrl + C" to copy the meta tag.

      Go back to WordPress and select "Settings" in the Dashboard. Then click "Meta Tag Manager."

      Enter the name of the Meta Tag (e.g., Google) in the "Reference Name" field.

      Click the meta name provided by Google or Yahoo! in the "Meta Name" field, and the URL provided by Google or Yahoo! in the "Content" field. Click "Save Changes."
