How to Install the Wii Softmod Without a Modchip
While unlocking your Wii with a softmod can allow you to play games that would work on other console systems, if you open the console to add a modchip to accomplish this, you'll void your warranty. Even if you do it with a softmod, but do not use a modchip, you will add play capacity, but speed and performance may slow down significantly. Since you will have added a modification that goes against your user agreement, you won't get any help from Nintendo support if your Wii stops working properly.

1
Purchase an SD card that you will be dedicating to playing burned game DVD's on your Wii system. Every time you play these games on your Wii, you'll need to put in this SD card too.
-
2
Acquire DVD-R's to use when you are burning games for play on your unlocked Wii.
-
-
3
Download a Wii unlocker application from the Internet onto the SD card. This card will tell the Wii to let you play the non-Wii games. Because every application has slightly different instructions, follow the prompts. Insert your SD card into your computer's dedicated port and save the download files to that card. When you put the card in your Wii, it will unlock the system for you.

Tips & Warnings
Check the laws in your state or country to ensure that you are not breaking laws by burning games or unlocking your Wii. In the U.S., burning games violates copyright law, but unlocking your Wii does not. You can play normal DVD-format games on a Wii from other formats, once you've unlocked it.
