Make a long Web page easier to navigate with a target link, which directs users to a specific point in the page. It's a breeze with Netscape Composer, a free, simple Web-design program included in the Netscape Communicator package.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Netscape Composer
  1. Step 1

Start Composer and choose Open from the File menu. Locate the page and double-click to open it.

  2. Step 2

Position the cursor where the target link will appear. Type the text you want to use for the link, or insert a graphic.

  3. Step 3

Highlight the text or graphic or position the cursor just before the text or graphic.

  4. Step 4

Open the Insert menu and choose Target, or click on the Target button on the toolbar.

  5. Step 5

Enter a name for the target link and click OK. A small box with a target and arrow will appear. This image indicates the location of the target and will not appear in the finished Web page.

  6. Step 6

Navigate to the target link by clicking Insert Link and choosing the Target name from the box.

  7. Step 7

Save the file and click on the Preview button to view it in the Netscape Navigator browser.

Tips & Warnings
  • Target links are especially useful when you put a "Table of Contents"-style list at the top of a page. The user gets a quick glance at the page's contents and can skip straight to the part he or she is most interested in.
  • Don't over-use target links. Readers can feel cheated if a link takes them only two lines farther down the page.
