How to Remove Patina

A patina is a greenish coating of certain metals. The patina that forms on bronze is prized by collectors, since it’s indicative of the piece’s age. Cleaning the patina from bronze reduces the value and exposes the bronze to damage. The patina that forms on pieces of silver and copper can be cleaned off if you like the look of shiny, new metal over the look of the patina.

Things You'll Need

• Bowl
• Mild soap
• Toothbrush
• Jewelry polishing cloth

Instructions

1. Fill a bowl with warm water and three or four drops of mild liquid soap.

2. Place the silver or copper piece into the water, and scrub the piece gently with a toothbrush.

3. Rinse the piece in warm water to remove the soap.

4. Dry the piece on a jewelry polishing cloth, and buff it to a shine.
