How to Do Latch Crochet
Latch crochet, or latch hook, is an easy craft to do and produces beautiful pieces that hold up nicely to everyday wear and tear. Most latch hook crafts come in kits that include everything you need to complete the project. Kits usually contain a canvas grid mat that is color-coded, several different colors of yarn in 2- to 3-inch strips that match the colors on the mat, a latch hook to attach the yarn to the mat and instructions. Many latch hook kits are easy enough that children can enjoy doing them too, and the kits can be found at any craft store.

1
Fold one piece of yarn in half around the hook, below the latch. Hold the looped end in place with your index finger.
-
2
Insert the hook into the hole below the canvas thread to which you want to attach the yarn. Bring it out of the hole above it. Push the hook through until the movable latch is above the canvas thread.

3
Grasp the loose ends of the yarn with your other hand and insert them into the hook above the latch. Pull the hook toward you gently until the latch closes. Release the ends of the yarn.
-
4
Pull the hook toward you again quickly. The hook will guide the ends of the yarn through the loop on the hook, completing the knot. Tighten the knot gently by pulling the ends evenly.

5
Repeat using the color-coded grid and yarn to complete your project.

Tips & Warnings
Latch hook projects can be used for many different things. Hang them on the wall as a work of art, or lay them on the floor for a plush rug.
If you end up with any uneven pieces of yarn when you are done, trim the stray ends with scissors.
Be careful not to pull too hard when tightening the knots. This can stretch or break the canvas threads, resulting in a project that won't lay flat.
