A behavior analyst works in a clinical setting to diagnose and assist clients with problem behavior.

Behavior analysis is the scientific study of human behavior. The field has grown significantly throughout the years and is now highly regulated by the government and various professional organizations. An associate, or assistant, behavior analyst is a junior practitioner who has reached a certain level of education and training. You can become an associate behavior analyst by following the path to certification as set forth by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board. An assistant analyst must apply for certification as a Board Certified Assistant Behavior Analyst.

Instructions

    • 1

Obtain a bachelor's degree in behavior analysis, natural science, education, human services, engineering or medicine. Complete 135 hours of classroom instruction in the five core areas of behavior analysis.

    • 2

Obtain a position where you can fulfill the supervised work experience requirement. One thousand hours of on-the-job experience is required. During this time, you must conduct intervention assessments, set up and run analysis programs for your clients, and oversee programs designed by others. You also must work with the staff and attend meetings concerning behavior analysis techniques and patient specifics.

    • 3

Work with multiple clients. Each client must be unique and free of the issues of any other client. For instance, you can not ethically counsel both members of a couple having marital problems. You also may not counsel anyone related to you by bloodline or marriage nor any social acquaintances.

    • 4

Work only within the confines of your contract and the BACB Guidelines for Responsible Conduct. Both of these documents outline your specific job duties and restrictions. Report any employer who requires you to perform any action directly forbidden in the BACB guidelines.

    • 5

Obtain documentation from your supervisor. Make a copy of this letter for your own records. Keep the other copy to submit to the BACB along with your application.

    • 6

Apply for certification with the BACB (see Resource). Pass the BCaBA certification exam to become a certified associate, or assistant, analyst.

Tips & Warnings

  • Always follow the professional guidelines set forth by the BACB. Failure to comply will result in the loss of your certification.

  • Always maintain professional decorum and follow the highest code of ethics. Any breach of ethics will cost you your certification, your ability to practice and will leave you vulnerable to civil fines.
