How to Make a Folded Block in Quilts

You can make a folded block in a quilt by stitching together a bow tie block design using pieces of quilt fabric. To do this you need to fold and sew squares of quilt fabric in a specific design. This project will require using a print fabric and white fabric. The result is a folded design of a bow tie that has two shapes within the quilt block.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the quilt print fabric with the ruler. Cut two pieces measuring 3 1/2 inches by 3 1/2 inches and a third piece measuring 2 3/4 inches by 2 3/4 inches with the scissors.

    • 2

Measure the white quilt fabric. Cut the fabric into two 3 1/2-inch-by-3 1/2-inch squares.

    • 3

Fold the 2 3/4-inch-square piece of print fabric across in half with the unfinished side facing out. Press the fold with the iron.

    • 4

Place the folded piece of print fabric in the upper right corner of one 3 1/2-inch-by-3 1/2-inch piece of the print fabric. Set one of the 3 1/2-inch-by-3 1/2-inch white fabric squares on top. Stitch the right vertical seam using a needle and thread.

    • 5

Fold the 3 1/2-inch pieces of print fabric and white fabric to the right so that the fold is on the left. Place the remaining white fabric under the folded piece of fabric. Set the remaining piece of print fabric on top. Stitch the left vertical seam.

    • 6

Fold the edge on one side of the print fabric and align it with one of the white fabric pieces. Sew the edge of the fabric. Repeat this step with the other edges of the fabric.
