How to Clean Alabaster Glass
Alabaster, a glassy, translucent stone, is often used to craft decorative items, lamps and jewelry. Alabaster is fragile and thus its soft surface is prone to scratches and other damage. The delicate stone often looks like it needs cleaning since it develops a natural patina as it ages. Improper cleaning materials and methods can permanently damage alabaster. The only cleaning most alabaster needs is a quick occasional dusting with a bristle brush. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Put on soft, clean gloves before you handle alabaster. Oils from bare hands can stain alabaster's surface.
-
2
Wrap masking tape around the metal parts of a soft bristle brush. This keeps the metal from scratching the alabaster. Brush the alabaster gently to remove loose dust and dirt.

3
Wipe the alabaster clean with a damp cloth only if a protective wax coats the stone's surface. If you use a cloth on unprotected alabaster, you may damage it.

Tips & Warnings
If liquid spills on alabaster, do not try to clean it up immediately. Doing so can actually make the stain permanent. Allow the stain to dry before attempting to clean it. In many cases, an alabaster conservator can remove the stain for you.
Never use chemical cleaners on alabaster.
