How to Increase Self-efficacy

How to Increase Self-efficacy thumbnail
One success is often the first step to future triumphs.

Self-efficacy refers to a person's belief in her own ability to succeed in a given area. In other words, the higher your self-efficacy, the more likely you are to believe that you can accomplish a particular task or goal. Self-esteem is based in large part on this belief, and many motivational speakers focus on beginning with the idea of self-efficacy as part of bringing individuals and teams to higher levels of achievement.

Instructions

    • 1

Take note of the successes of those around you. Some people get defensive and jealous when others succeed, but that will only limit the possibility for improvement, because those feelings lessen self-efficacy. Also, if you note the success of others and ask them for advice, you can build networks and gain information that will help you down the road. If you view the fact that others succeeded as proof that you can do it too, your self-efficacy will increase.

    • 2

Listen to the motivational advice that others give you. Even if the person building you up is a parent or teacher, don't discount the advice because it's coming from someone who is obligated to help you. Those who are closest to you know you best and are in the best position to help you work around your own flaws and move toward success.

    • 3

Eliminate as many sources of stress or anxiety as you can. Remember that, while each individual attempt to succeed is important, there will be others down the road. The more worried you are that you're going to fail, the likelier that failure actually becomes.

    • 4

Take notes after every success that you have. Write down the specific strategies you used to achieve your goal, so you will have the ability to replicate that accomplishment the next time. While no two goals or experiences are the same, building successful habits, such as organization, preparation and self-discipline, will go a long way toward helping you build a repeated pattern of excellence.
