How to Sew Welting Onto a Car Seat
Customize car seat design to add a more personal theme to your vehicle. Welting is the tubing that runs around the edge of a car seat as a trim. You can sew your own welting onto a car seat, using special tools, to make your own design around your car seat edge. You should gauge how thick the center piece around the welt cord has to be before starting.

1
Remove the car seat cover. Cut away the seams to which you want to add the welting, using scissors.

2
Wrap a scrap piece of upholstery around some welt cord. Position the center piece in between two more scrap pieces of upholstery. Sew the pieces together to secure the center piece in place. Measure 1/2 inch from the seam and mark it on the scrap pieces with a pen. Cut off the excess. Remove the side scraps of upholstery and measure the center piece width to see how wide the center piece needs to be with a ruler.

3
Cut a center piece as long as you need it to the correct width. Fold it around a length of welt cord. Sew the folded center piece to the first section of the car upholstery. Cut off the threads at the end with scissors.

4
Align the other side of the upholstery upside down on the seam side of the welt. Sew down the entire length of the section, keeping the welt in the track of the welt feet on the sewing machine. Cut off the thread at the end. Repeat this on every section of the car upholstery to which you would like to add a welt.
