How to Install Cam Harness Restraints

How to Install Cam Harness Restraints thumbnail
Install a cam harness to secure your child to his seat.

Cam harness restraints are supplemental seatbelts, used to secure children in a more secure manner after they graduate from car seats. These harnesses still utilize the lap belts in a car, truck or bus, along with the actual seat back for support. These restraints are safer than standard shoulder belts, providing four or five points of support rather than two.

Instructions

    • 1

Disconnect the existing lap belt and separate the two halves.

    • 2

Slide the thicker singular strap between the base of the seat back and the cushion. Loop the strap around the back of the seat, and buckle the two halves together.

    • 3

Bring the two thigh straps under the seat back. Lay them on the seat cushion. These two straps should form a triangle on the seat back.

    • 4

Lay the shoulder straps flat along the front of the seat. Loop the vehicle's lap belt through the thigh and shoulder straps.

    • 5

Place the child into the harness. Buckle the lap belt and adjust by pulling the slack end as needed. Clip the breast clip together. Slide this up, centered on the child's breastbone.

    • 6

Pull on the slack end of the primary strap located behind the seat back to adjust the tension of the shoulder straps. You should only be able to insert one finger at most between the child and strap.

    • 7

Release the harness by unclipping the lap belt and breast clip.

Tips & Warnings

  • Always consult your state's restraint laws prior to selecting a car/booster seat, cam harness or standard safety belt.

  • Bring your harness assembly to your local emergency services department for a final check if you are unsure of the installation.
