How to Disinfect Power Toothbrush Heads

Disinfecting the head on a power toothbrush may remove the bacterial buildup that accrues, until it's time to replace the head. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention does not recommend disinfecting toothbrush heads in solutions or mouthwash, because it may lead to cross-contamination if the solution is reused. Disinfecting the head in the microwave or dishwasher is likely to damage the toothbrush, and so not recommended by manufacturers of power toothbrushes. An ultraviolet sanitizer, sold as a separate accessory or included with some power toothbrushes, purportedly kill yeasts and molds, and bacteria such as strep, salmonella, and E. coli.       Rinse the heads under running water and shake off any excess water.

      Open the UV sanitizer unit.

      Set the heads securely in the sanitizer.

      Plug the sanitizer unit's power cord into an electrical outlet. The type of electrical outlet required varies by the model.

      Close the sanitizer door and press the "On" button. The unit should automatically start sanitizing the heads. It will shut off after it finishes disinfecting, usually in about 10 minutes. Typically, a light remains lit while the unit is working and it shuts off when the unit is finished.

      Remove the toothbrush heads from the sanitizer and place them back on their shafts and back into the charging units.

Tips & Warnings

  • Disassemble the toothbrush after each use and rinse it under running water. Wipe the parts thoroughly dry before placing it back on the charger.

  • Never share toothbrushes with others and make sure the toothbrush heads don't touch each other.

  • Do not keep a toothbrush in a closed container, where mold and other bacteria can multiply.
