How to Knit Alternating Stripes in the Round

Knitting stripes in the round is slightly different from knitting them on a flat piece. When knitting on straight needles, you join new yarn on the edges of the piece and weave in the tails when you're done. When knitting in the round, you must join new yarn on the inside of the tube. Using a stitch marker to mark the beginnings of rounds and learning how to trap yarn tails as you knit are the keys to this technique.

Instructions

    • 1

Place a stitch marker on your right needle before joining the first round.

    • 2

Knit the first stitch on the left needle with the working yarn coming from the right needle to join the round.

    • 3

Knit until you want to join the new yarn, slipping the stitch marker at the end of every round.

    • 4

Cut the working yarn, leaving a 3-inch tail.

    • 5

Insert the right needle into the first stitch on the left needle. Fold the new working yarn, leaving a 3-inch tail. Hang the fold on the right needle and knit the first stitch of the round with the new yarn.

    • 6

Hold the two yarn tails in place against the inside of your work. Twist them around the working yarn one time before knitting the next stitch. Pull only the new yarn through the stitch.

    • 7

Twist the tails one time around the new yarn with every other stitch until the tails are fully trapped in the new yarn.

    • 8

Continue knitting until you are ready to make the next stripe.
